2021 Book Recommendations & Summaries

I’ve read 16 books this year, if I do not count the books I’ve read once in the past. Out of those, I would recommend the following five:

  • Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter
    • A Pulitzer Prize winner, It combines math, art, music, and AI seamlessly to answer the question: “Do words and thoughts follow formal rules, or do they not?”
  • A Dead Djinn in Cairo (Dead Djinn Universe) by P. Djèlí Clark
    • Reading this book was like playing the best RPG games e.g. God of War Ragnarok, The Witcher, The Mass Effect, or like playing/reading the Fate series, except this one is set in Egypt.
  • Know my name by Chanel Miller
    • The author’s personal account of an sexual assult. Eye-widening and thought-provoking for male and female readers alike.
  • How emotions are made by Lisa Feldman Barrett
    • A good book in the times of lockdown and restricted travel. It provides an alternative view to the classical view of the brain and emotions.
  • Winning: The Ultimate Business How-To Book by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch
    • A practical business book written by one of the most widely-recognized successful CEOs. It shows you the different perspectives through which you can view your work environment, your colleagues, your projects, and your career.

  • 《A Dead Djinn in Cairo》 作者:P. Djèlí Clark
  • 《Know my name》
  • 《How emotions are made》 作者:Lisa Feldman Barrett
  • 《Winning: The Ultimate Business How-To Book》 作者:Jack Welch and Suzy Welch
