アイアムアヒーロー

This is a zombie manga. I first heard about it from 内山昂輝’s radio. He talked about the movie and said that it still surprised him even though he knew the plot exactly. He was quite right about the manga at least. The manga had a very realistic depiction of a zombie apocalypse — how people start coughing and suddenly getting sick, and how it spread from one to the other, from city to city. The main character is pretty interesting. He was not normal. He was crazy enough to get a rifle’s license even though he lives in Tokyo and he would talk to himself when he draw manga and before he fall asleep. That’s the type of person who survive during an apocalypse I guess.

The rest of the story was pretty disturbing and maybe disappointing. It became a sort of love story between the protagonist and the two female characters. I totally didn’t expect the ending. It did not explain anything and wasted so many good ideas about why the whole outbreak happened and how to save the humanity etc. I even questioned why the main character is still alive after all this. I have to say that I liked the beginning a lot better.

The three female characters were kind of interesting. I think they represented the three different types of relationship — the first one was perhaps the least romantic but the most stable and 優しい. The second one was adventurous, but perhaps did not have as deep of a love and understanding of each other. The third one was possessive, inexperienced, and almost childish.

It’s a good entertainment manga, but there are certainly some huge drawbacks — I wasn’t able to see the overall message of the piece and the ending clearly.
